  976 Evil 1988
Posted by Tombcreeper @ Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:29 pm
Watch at Crackle.com
http://www.crackle.com/c/976-Evil

STARRING: Robert Picardo, Stephen Geoffreys, Patrick O'Bryan, Sandy Dennis, Jim Metzler, Maria Rubell, Lezlie Deane and Cynthia Szigeti.

Two cousins, Spike (Patrick O'Bryan) and Hoax (Stephen Geoffreys), happen upon a 976 phone number (remember those kids? From way back in the 80's!) that turns out to be a direct line to Satan himself. Whenever anyone calls, they become possessed by Satan and be-gifted with evil powers. All sorts of fun ensues.

Ok, this is slightly past the mark, being released in 1988, but when I saw it listed at Crackle, I knew I had to run it here. Despite what anyone says, this is not all that bad a movie! Maybe it's the era, maybe it's Robert Englund's direction or maybe the presence of Stephen Geoffreys, underneath all the cheese, something DOES work here. Come on guys, anyone agree? Nooo? Hrrmmm... well I liked it. Of course I am harking back to the late 80's and the last time I saw it. Maybe when I watch 976 Evil again, tonight, I might have a somewhat different viewpoint. I invite you to join me, agree or disagree. The popcorn's hot and the Pepsi is cold...

TRIVIA:

976 Evil was directed by Robert Englund aka Freddy Krugar from Nightmare On Elm Street.

Was followed by 976-Evil II (1992) which was NOT directed by Robert Englund and does not feature key player Stephen Geoffries, but does star Patrick O'Bryan, who reprises his role as Spike.

Robert Englund also directed horror comedy film Killer Pad (2008), and 2 episodes of TV's Freddy's Nightmares, Monkey Dreams and Cabin Fever (1989).

When Hoax casts the spell that makes spiders come out of Suzie's TV dinner, there's a box of snack cakes behind the TV dinner called Devil Twins. - IMDB

VHS and laserdisc versions are uncut and contain footage previously unseen in its original theatrical release. - Wikipedia

Continuity: When the girlfriend of the lead actor and his cousin are sitting eating pizza in a diner, his hair goes changes how messy it is through the scene. -IMDB

Continuity: When Hoax gets sick dissecting the frog he removes the surgical glove from his right hand. Then in the mirror in the bathroom it's back as he pulls out his hair, then when he's attacking the thug it's gone and then when he cuts off another thugs hand it's back. - IMDB

  Son Of Ingagi 1940

STARRING: Zack Williams, Laura Bowman, Alfred Grant, Daisy Bufford, Arthur Ray, Spencer Williams, Earl J. Morris and Jesse Graves.

A mysterious Dr. Jackson keeps an ape creature in her basement. After ingesting a potion, it murders her. A young newlywed couple are willed her spooky old estate, along with, unbeknownst to them, the homicidal ape creature.

Son of Ingagi is the first science fiction / horror film to feature a completely black cast and was heralded in African-American newspapers for "racial advancement" for the depiction of African-Americans holding professional jobs such as scientist, lawyer and detective.

Son of Ingagi was directed by Caucasian American director Richard Kahn.

"Both Richard Gilliam of Allmovie and Erb note that Ingagi was probably influenced by Boris Karloff's character in Frankenstein with Ingina's outbursts of violence and tendency to show emotions of suffering and being mournful." -Wikipedia

Spencer Williams (Detective Nelson) appeared as Andy on the Amos and Andy TV series from 1951 - 1952.

Son Of Ingagi was written by Spencer Williams based on a short story that he himself wrote entitled House of Horror.

The production company was so impressed by Spencer Williams script that they permitted him to direct and write the 1941 feature film The Blood of Jesus.

Musical group The Toppers appear and perform as themselves in the film.

A 1930 exploitation film entitled Ingagi, which was touted as a documentary about the African expedition of Sir Hubert Winstead and his discovery of a tribe of women who worship gorillas, was an inspiration for the title Son Of Ingagi, but in fact the two films have little in common.

The Brain From Planet Arous 1957

STARRING: John Agar, Joyce Meadows and Robert Fuller.

A brain-like creature named Gor possesses a scientist's brain and through him attempts to take over the world. Lucky for us Vol is on the way...

Over 70 minutes of John Agar and brains on wires. Who could reasonably ask for more? This one has it all; painful metamorphosis, alien brains, atom bombs, all kinds of fun stuff. Warning: this is a terrible, terrible movie, but a fun camp classic. It's hard to believe these were the movies that scared us silly when we were kids! This one won't scare you now (unless of course, there is something wrong with you), but it will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling for the old days. Ahhh nostalgia, hey, is that Roquefort on your popcorn?

TRIVIA:

The Brain From Planet Arous was shown as a double-feature with Monster from Green Hell.

Wikipedia reports that the spooky effect on John Agar's eyes was achieved using special contact lenses lined with metal foil, which was later used in the second Star Trek pilot episode Where No Man Has Gone Before. Alas, other sources, including IMDB, site thick black contact lenses for the effect. Whichever really was used, (or maybe it's the same effect, described, um WAY differently?) it was said to have caused a painful ordeal for John Agar.

TV show Malcolm in the Middle uses a clip from The Brain from Planet Arous in opening credits. An 80's ad for TV Guide also utilized a small clip.

That territory look familiar? It should. It's the same cave and surrounding area that were used in Robot Monster.

Director Nathan Juran had himself billed as Nathan Hertz (his middle name), and it has been suggested this was because he was embarrassed by the film. Ya think?
